Tile leveling system: clips, wedges and spin caps

With a tile leveling system (also written levelling system) you lay a flat tile floor without lippage, even with large-format and thin tiles. IL-MONDO supplies clips for 1, 1.5, 2 and 3 mm joints, wedges, spin caps and leveling pliers, by the bag in our showroom in Merelbeke.

What is lippage and what does a leveling system do?

Lippage is the height difference between the edges of two tiles. Together with uneven joint widths and small installation errors, it determines the quality and the final look of tile work.

A leveling system solves that. It applies even, controlled pressure at every point, so the tiles stay exactly flat and the surface does not become wavy.

The result is precise alignment, a reliable result, a neat finish and a uniform look. You also install faster, and it is easy to use.

The system is made for professional tilers, contractors and private individuals who tile themselves. The key to a good result is the right number of clips per tile and the right pressure.

Also see our large-format tiles, where a leveling system makes the difference.

How does it work? Installing in 4 steps

This is how you install tiles with the wedge system (tile clips and wedges):

  1. Combing tile adhesive with a notched trowel

    Apply and comb the adhesive

Apply the adhesive and comb it with the right notched trowel. From 60x60 you work with buttering-floating.

  2. Leveling clip under the edge of a tile in the adhesive

    Clips under the tile

Slide the clips under the tile into the adhesive, about 8 to 10 cm from each end of the tile side. Then lay the next tile against it.

  3. Tightening the wedges in the clips to pull the tiles flat

    Tighten the wedges

Slide the wedge into the clip and tighten it with the pliers. The tiles are pulled flat, aligned, held at the joint width and fixed.

  4. Knocking the clips off with a rubber mallet in the direction of the joint

    Knock off the clips

Once the adhesive has hardened, knock the clip off with a rubber mallet in the direction of the joint. It breaks off at the intended breaking point. Keep the wedges for reuse.

The spin system works on the same principle. The only difference: you screw a cap onto the clip instead of tightening a wedge with the pliers.

You can find the notched trowel and adhesive consumption per m² in our guide to tiles, adhesive and grout per m².

Which clip for which tile thickness?

The numbers 1, 1.5, 2 and 3 mm in the clip name are the joint width, not the tile thickness. The tile thickness a clip is suitable for is listed separately per clip.

Larger tiles need fewer clips per m², but every tile side needs clips.

The columns follow the area of the tile: up to 0.09 m² (30x30), up to 0.36 m² (60x60), up to 0.72 m² (60x120). Anything larger falls under 'Larger than 60x120', for example 90x90 and 120x120. Calculate on the net area, not on the ordered area including cutting waste.

Not sure yet how many m² you need? Use the tile calculator.

How many clips per tile?

Place the clips about 8 to 10 cm from each end of the tile side. Every tile side needs clips, even with large formats where you count fewer clips per m².

Wedge or spin: which system do you choose?

Both systems keep tiles flat and at the joint width. The difference is in how you apply the pressure.

Leveling pliers tightening a wedge in a clip

Wedge: clips, wedges and pliers

  • You tighten the wedge with the leveling pliers, with adjustable tension.
  • Fast on large floor areas.
  • Clips for tile thicknesses of 4–40 mm.
Spin system with caps in rows on a tiled floorSpin system with caps on a tiled wall

Spin: clips and caps

  • You control the pressure by tightening the cap. Pliers are not needed.
  • Handy on walls and for less experienced installers.
  • Spin clips are only available for tiles of 14–30 mm.

Not sure? Tell us your tile thickness and your room, and we will advise you in the showroom or on WhatsApp.

Common mistakes when installing with clips

  1. The wrong clip for the tile thickness

First pick the clip whose thickness range suits your tile, and only then the joint width. The table above helps you with that.

  2. Too few clips on large formats

You need fewer clips per m², but every tile side needs clips. Place them about 8 to 10 cm from each end of the tile side.

  3. Knocking off the clips before the adhesive has hardened

Wait until the adhesive has hardened before you knock off the clips. Until then, the clip holds the tile flat and at the joint width.

  4. Kicking the clips off instead of knocking them off

Knock the clip off with a rubber mallet in the direction of the joint. That way it breaks at the intended breaking point.

  5. Thinking that leveling fixes a poor substrate or a too thin adhesive bed

It does not. First make sure you have a good substrate and a full adhesive bed: from 60x60 with buttering-floating.

You can read more about the right notched trowel and buttering-floating in the adhesive section of our guide.

Frequently asked questions about the tile leveling system

Which clip do I choose for which tile thickness?

Choose first by tile thickness and then by joint width. Wedge clips: Hairline (ILM-CL-1.0, 4–9 mm), Allround (ILM-CL-1.5, 4–12 mm), Pro (ILM-CL-2.0, 9–20 mm) and Heavy (ILM-CL-3.0, 20–30 mm). Outdoor clips: Terrace (ILM-OCL-2.0, 20–30 mm) and Terrace XL (ILM-OCL-3.0, 30–40 mm). Spin clips: Twist Fine (ILM-SC-1.0) and Twist Pro (ILM-SC-2.0), 14–30 mm. The numbers 1, 1.5, 2 and 3 mm in the name are the joint width, not the tile thickness.

How many clips do I need per m²?

That depends on the tile size and the clip. With Pro (ILM-CL-2.0), allow 30–35 clips per m² for tiles up to 30x30, 15–20 for 60x60, 10–15 for 60x120 and 8–10 for larger tiles. Example: 30 m² of 60x60 with Pro (ILM-CL-2.0) is 450–600 clips, so 2–3 bags (€24–36 incl. VAT).

Wedge or spin: what is the difference?

With the wedge system you tighten a wedge with the pliers; that is fast on large floor areas. With the spin system you screw a cap onto the clip and control the pressure yourself, without pliers. That is handy on walls and for less experienced installers. Spin clips are available for tiles of 14–30 mm.

Are the wedges reusable?

Yes. Wedges and spin caps are reusable 10 to 20 times. You knock the clips off once the adhesive has hardened; they break off at the intended breaking point.

Do I need pliers?

With the wedge system you tighten the wedges with the Level Tang pliers (ILM-PL-1.0, €12.00 incl. VAT per piece, with adjustable tension). With the spin system you do not need pliers: you tighten the cap.

Does it also work on a wall?

Yes. Hairline (ILM-CL-1.0), Allround (ILM-CL-1.5) and Pro (ILM-CL-2.0) and the spin clips are meant for wall and floor. Heavy (ILM-CL-3.0) and the outdoor clips are for floors. On a wall the spin system is handy, because you control the pressure with the cap.

Which clip for 20 mm terrace tiles?

For 20 mm terrace tiles with a 2 mm joint, choose Terrace (ILM-OCL-2.0), suitable for 20–30 mm. For tiles of 30–40 mm with a 3 mm joint there is Terrace XL (ILM-OCL-3.0). The spin system also works: Twist Fine (ILM-SC-1.0) and Twist Pro (ILM-SC-2.0) fit 14–30 mm.

Where can I buy the clips?

By the bag in our showroom in Merelbeke, or order via WhatsApp or quote. A bag of clips costs €12.00 incl. VAT (€9.92 excl. VAT).
